Lynn Mctier: your are not connected properly.unless you have a multi-port router (or wireless), it wont work as you described. the DSL line is terminating into a modem, not a router.if the modem only has 1 ethernet port, you cant create a network of 2 or more PC's without a router.the router would be connected to the modem, and each PC must be connected to the router with individual ethernet connections.if you can get a modem that has a built-in 4-port router, then both PC's would need to be connected to any of those 4 ports...Show more
Truman Biby: how many are wireless
Kate Baune: A router is often needed to create a community between any volume of computers. there is a thank you to create an "advert-hoc" (that's what it is referred to as in domicile windows community settings) community between 2 pc's, yet in all my tries, i've got in no way been in a position to get it to artwork precise.
Danica Timperman: There could be any number of things wrong so! lets do a little basic troubleshooting. How many ports does you router have? Have you tried swapping the cables from the working PC to the non working PC to see if that makes a difference (could be a bad cable or wrong type of cable)? Have you checked the TCP/IP Properties in the ethernet adapter settings to make sure it's set to "Obtain IP Address Automatically"?
Raye Tredennick: Both computers need to be connected to the router via ethernet cable.Once both computers are connected to the router you can set up a network.
Lolita Deschamp: You need to connect the 2nd computer to the router - you can't piggyback' a connection from one PC to another - either wired or wirelessly your computers need to be hooked directly to the router.
Coleman Coscia: the router needs each of its ports to each pc. For example pc to router, second pc to router. Then the rest of your setup should work. The phone line should go to the modem. If this is a modem/router box and you d! on't have enough ports. buy a network switch to put in between! the pcs and the router.
Abraham Ladick: FIrst you need to make sure the pc's are in the same workgroup, you can set the workgroup name under MY computer > Properties > Computer Name > change buttonboth pcs must be in the same workgroup to communicate and also must be in the same subnet range . example 192.168.1.xxAfter you set the workgroup connect the modem to your router [WAN port] and then connect both pcs via ethernet cable to the router.Make sure both Pc's have the firewall disabled and then browse to My network places and select workgroups it should expand and show your workgroup name. clciking on the workgroup name will show any shares on either pc, if you are prompted for a password on accessing a folder simply enter the administrator pass or a valid user :pass on the system with the share....Show more
