Matt Gerdeman: Our district has a home study program in addition to the independent study for high schoolers. It is for K-12. My children used to be enrolled. But, the teachers didn't give us anything unless we wanted it. They came every 2 weeks to see what we had been doing, to bring materials we requested, give us school newsletters, book orders, etc. We didn't use their materials, or textbooks most of the time. We had full freedom. But, they became accredited and changed. They push to test (I never did) and to teach the grade level expectations. They require a report card with grades, when we used to just write what we had done during the year. So, it might be good for a new home schooler, to get his or her feet wet, but in the long run our program became nothing but the classroom work done at home. I find that defeats the purpose of home schooling. Why do it if they just have to learn the same things, from the same books? Home school can be so much more th! an that! The one thing we enjoyed was the school events, being a district program the kids would do science festivals, young author projects, all the things the district did. Plus they could go to the local school for extras, like band. In our state home schoolers can't participate in school events. It worked for us, but doesn't anymore. People are correct in that it isn't "home school" but an alternative public school. At first though, when we could do what we wanted it was just the same as home schooling. No requirements as to curriculum or subjects at all....Show more
Shelley Stevens: If it is through a public school then it is not homeschooling. It is either independent studies or a distance virtual or cyber charter school. Homeschooling is like using a private school, you have no ties to a public school. The only difference being that homeschoolers have to follow any reporting requirement for their state, which does in some states include limited contact wit! h someone affiliated with the local public school system for t! esting or evaluations.
Jules Ashbach: I only heard a parent done this: take their child to school half day, and the other half day the child goes home and gets taught by their parents. In details:This student is classified as a ADHD student so the only subject that the teacher teaches in there are English, and the child goes home after lunch. The parent(s) teach their child math. Child comes back turns in their math homework along with other assigned assignment...Show more
David Kuper: I tried that, but the counselor said that you're either in or not. There is no halfway. The rule may be different, depending on the state.
