why do people perform with a headset mic and a handheld ?

Hyman Coren: The handheld picks up better fidelity and is often used as a prop. the headset mike is more reliable and looks all cool and Sci-Fi. Most of the time, they are lip syncing to a background tape and do all the real vocals in post production anyway, so much of that is for show. If you were to hear what they were really doing while they were performing (thanks to the strenuous choreography) you would hear a lot more heavy breathing and costume noise.
